Darkan

Welcome to the West Arthur Shire

The Shire of West Arthur sits between Western Australia’s Southwest and Wheatbelt with a population of around nine hundred eighty.

Darkan, the main town in the shire, is situated roughly two hundred kilometres southeast of Perth and sixty kilometres east of Collie on the Roelands-Lake King Rd (also known as the Coalfields Hwy). This small country town, population approximately one hundred and eighty, services a highly productive wool growing/mixed farming area and also has several rural engineering works. Darkan originally developed in the early 1900’s when the Collie to Narrogin railway line was built and soon became the administrative centre of the West Arthur Shire. The railway line was officially closed in the early 1990’s but Darkan continues to grow steadily.

Points of interest around Darkan include the old Railway Station and Station Masters House, Six Mile Cottage, Hillman Rock and Railway Dam, the Hillman Farm Skydivers, Darkan Mill Cottages and old sawmill as well as the Youth Park, which features a BMX track, roller blade/skateboard area, half court basketball, trampolines, Gazebo, BBQ area and Youth Shed.

The Collie – Darkan Rail Trail is now being constructed along the disused railway corridor between Darkan and Buckingham (20km east of Collie), this first section will be open to hikers, horse riders, horse and buggy drivers and cyclists in October 2005.

Various Jarrah, Flood gum and Wandoo bushland reserves around the shire offer marvellous displays of wildflowers through winter, spring and early summer and the many quiet gravel back roads offer splendid views of rural landscape.

Other townsites in shire are Arthur River and Duranillin. Localities include Bokal, Bowelling, Boolading, Capercup, Cordering, East Arthur, Gibbs Crossing, Hillman, James Crossing, Kylie, McAlinden and Moodiarrup.
